Vic: Protest outside Libs convention

About 50 protesters have lit flares and held a minute's silence to call for an end
to mandatory sentencing outside the Liberal Party's national convention in Melbourne.

Actors dressed as United Nations soldiers have addressed the crowd, saying the international
community has stepped in to restore sanity to Australia.

Australian Conservation Foundation spokesman DAVE SWEENEY says the protesters want
to remind Liberal delegates at the conference their policies are unpopular.

He says politicians should always remember that their half life is much less than that
of radioactive material.

Mounted and uniformed police are blocking most entrances to the Melbourne Convention Centre.

They're trying to avoid a repeat of Friday's demonstrations in which about 100 noisy
protesters tried to storm the conference.
