SA: Appeal on suspended sentence for shooting
The South Australian government will appeal against a suspended jail sentence givento a man who shot a newspaper delivery driver in the face.
Attorney-General PAUL HOLLOWAY has announced an appeal will be lodged, after PremierMIKE RANN last week said 21-year-old PAUL HABIB NEMER deserved to be jailed for the crime.
The decision came after an inquiry by the state's Solicitor General CHRIS KOURAKIS.
Mr KOURAKIS says he believes there are good grounds to argue that the sentence is somanifestly inadequate it should be increased on appeal.
NEMER shot GEOFFREY WILLIAMS in the face while WILLIAMS was on his early morning newspaperround in August, 2001.
After plea bargaining, all charges against NEMER were withdrawn except the charge ofendangering life.
NEMER pleaded guilty to the charge and was given a suspended jail term of three yearsand three months, and a $100 three-year good behaviour bond.
