FED: Building approvals rise by 3.1 pct in July

The national construction sector is continuing strongly with a 3.1 per cent rise in
building approvals to just over 14,000 homes in July.

Building approvals in the month stood at 6.6 per cent higher than July last year,
seasonally adjusted.

The figure is stronger than market expectations, which had centred on a fall of 2.5 per
cent in July, following a 6.9 per cent rise in June.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics says approvals for private sector houses increased by
6.6 per cent in the month.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for other dwellings fell by 3.2 per cent after a
substantial gain of 30.4 per cent in June.
